The Tasmeem Doha Event Begins in Three Weeks...

The biannual Tasmeem Doha Conference begins in three weeks time. It's the biggest Design Conference of the MENA/ GCC region that, this year, not only includes a two day talking-heads component, but also five days of Student Labs, done in collaboration with the Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art; a set of Academic Research Workshops, a number of exhibitions by both regional and international artists, designers and architects, and a film festival. The keynote speaker is Rem Koolhaas...

There's still much to do during the next few weeks (I'm co-chairing the event) but I think it's going to be a very exciting and interesting eight days...

Work in Progress - Finger/ Fork Side-Table, Doha...

A few images of an ongoing project, scheduled to be completed for one the exhibits at the upcoming Tasmeem - Doha Conference/ Labs/ Workshops/ Exhibitions, taking place between March 10-17, 2013... A set of the side-table that, as it stand, is being produced in two different formats, can be unified in a similar manner to crossing fingers (or entwined fork-spokes) which, in unison, allow for a surprising number of different compositions...

The final set, which will include a number of bespoke paraphernalia (more of those at a later date) is scheduled to be completed within a month... More images of the piece to be posted then...

Tasmeem Lab Liaison Workshop - VCU Arts, Richmond, VA...

A few images from a recent one day VCU Arts (in Richmond) workshop run for the 'Lab Liaisons', a select set of VCU students who will be assisting the Tasmeem Lab Leaders with the running of their five day workshop during the upcoming Tasmeem - Doha event, which this year will be exploring the notion of 'Hybrid Making'...

The illustrated exercise, which was set-up by Corin Hewitt, one of the Lab Leaders and faculty at the sculpture department at VCU, asked the participants to create, through manually mixing variously colored pieces of plasticine, the matching color of a verbally described, but hidden, sample piece. Whoever got the color of their plasticine closest to the sample's color 'won' the round...

All these students, who range in study backgrounds from music, to art history, to interior design - and in experience from Foundation to Graduate level studies - will all be joining us at Mathaf for the Lab segment of the Tasmeem event... The viewing of the Labs is open to the public so, if you're in the neighborhood, please stop by Mathaf and take a look what wonders the international set of Lab Leaders and students will produce during Tasmeem - Doha's initial five days (March 10 - 14, 2013)...

The program will be on Yle Areena, on Saturday December 22, at 18.15 local (Finnish) time... The program is mainly in Finnish...

Please take a moment to amuse yourselves with how awkward I seem in front of the camera...

Berry-Bowl - An 'Old School' Design...

A few 'old-school' images I came across whilst skimming through one of my hard-drives, of a project I did during my school days, at the AA, completed in 1997... These photos, even though somewhat grainy and over-contrasted, nevetheless capture quite well the subtle richness of the bowls' colors and translucencies as well as their inherent tactile qualities that, in their bulbous curves, encourage one to touch and interact with the design...

The design's original mold was made out of a short, log-like, segment of birch, brought by my father (with bark and all) from Vilnius to London in a duffel bag (to the custom officers surprise). This I shaped (using a lathe) at the school wood-workshop into a 1:1 replica of the bowl. This, in turn, was sent back to a glass factory in Lithuania where, according to the somewhat rudimentary pictorial instructions included below (as I don't speak Lithuanian and none of the personnel at the factory seemed to understand English) the bowl was fabricated... After a bit of toing & froing (a number of prototypes...) the bowl reached a form I could be content with...

It had its first showing at a small exhibition conducted by a, somewhat ad-hoc, group of fellow AA students called N.A.I.L. (Nordic Architects in London), where we displayed some of our smaller scale design works (this included an early rendition of the Cu3o Cabinet)... Good times...

I still have a few samples left of the bowl, perhaps I'll re-photograph them and include a future blog entry with a tad more 'professional' images of the design...

VCUQ Stairwell, Education City, Doha...

Whilst certainly not intentional, the main stairwell here in the new wing of VCUQ is, nevertheless, interesting due to the structural conundrums that take place below, in the soffit of the stairwell...
