BendDesk - Multi-touch Curved Display...



Continuing on from the last post, the short video above provides an interesting parallel alternative to the 'Beautiful Modeler' version of a haptic (G)UI. Here the 'arm fatigue' (as mentioned by Steven Jobs a while back) of using a haptic interface on a vertical screen is avoided by smoothly unifying it with the horizontal plane.

If it only now can be made to fit a laptop and we're on to something (potentially) truly worthwhile and interesting...

Beautiful Modeler - Multi-Touch Controller...



In some previous blog-entries I've discussed the various options and opportunities provided by the various interfaces, augmented or otherwise, popping up on a regular basis in the technosphere... The above video introduces a new, quite interesting, update on how a GUI, here with a quasi-tactile interface, can introduce and provide yet additional opportunities for how a 3D avatar can be manipulated... This example is still somewhat ad-hoc, as the results of the video's artifact seem somewhat random to say the least, but the potential is there, and with a bit more tweaking and focused effort it will hopefully amount to something usable in the not too distant future...

Using a SensAble Haptic Interface...



I finally managed to download the included short videos of me using a Sensable Phantom haptic interface, which was used in the making of the Finger Run tablets and the Snakeskin tactile interface... The device and the accompanying software allow one to 'feel', and thus control & design, things on the screen through the sense of touch... The video above was filmed a few years back, at our old floating office on the HMS President 1918, docked by to the Blackfriars bridge by the Thames Embankment (opposite the Oxo Tower) in London... The video below shows a screen-shot of how this voxel based software, which allows one to design and manipulate the 'digital-clay' on the screen... Both the above mentioned designs were eventually fabricated through various both subtractive and additive CAM processes...
